How Microneedling Works

Microneedling works by creating thousands of tiny channels of micro-injuries in the skin, penetrating the skin’s surface to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. Just like anytime you get a cut or other surface injury, your body quickly works to repair itself, microneedling causes an increase in blood circulation, collagen production and the production of other important proteins.*

Unlike when you get a cut, however, the injuries created by the microneedling process are too small to actually cause any visible scarring or damage. Instead, you’ll get all the benefits of the healing process without the drawbacks of an actual skin injury. That’s why the treatment can be so beneficial for anti-aging, as well as for healing scars and other types of environmental damage.*

While microneedling is typically applied to the face, the treatment can be used virtually anywhere on the body, including the décolletage, hands and neck. You can even use microneedling to help fade stretch marks.*

What to Expect from Microneedling

Microneedling is a nonsurgical procedure, but there’s still some prep work involved. To start out, a topical numbing cream will be applied to your entire face. You’ll need to wait around 45 minutes for the numbing solution to fully kick in, so you can relax and read a magazine or check emails while you wait.

Once your face is fully numb, a special device shaped like a large pen will be passed over your skin. The microneedling pen is tipped with tiny needles that will penetrate the skin’s surface, creating channels that reach down into the deep dermal layer where collagen is produced. Most people feel little to no discomfort during the treatment, but you may feel vibrations passing over your skin.*

It’s common for people to combine microneedling with chemical peels or skin care products since topical treatments can penetrate the skin to a greater depth when applied immediately after the microneedling process.*

Recovering from Microneedling

After your microneedling treatment, your skin will be red and slightly swollen for the remainder of the day. For this reason, it’s a good idea to schedule microneedling on a day when you can go home right after and relax. Your skin will remain pinkish with minor inflammation and a slightly rough for the following 3 to 5 days. This is a natural part of the healing process and should clear up within 1 week of your treatment. You should avoid direct sun exposure for the following 2 weeks and be sure to keep your skin as clean as possible during this time.*

Typical Microneedling Results

If the first few days of healing have you worried, don’t fret. About a week after your treatment, you should start to notice a healthier glow to your skin. Individual results will vary depending on how you react to the treatment, but in general, you should notice smaller pore size and a more youthful appearance.*

Any treatment that stimulates collagen can continue to produce results for weeks and even months. Your results should appear completely natural, because they are! Your complexion will make full use of your body’s natural healing properties, so while your friends may notice that you look glowing, you’ll simply have the appearance of being healthy, youthful and well-rested. You may also notice that any scarring or wrinkles gradually smooth out and appear less noticeable as your skin heals.*

Most people get a series of 3 to 5 microneedling treatments spaced about a month apart, with each treatment building upon the results of your previous treatments. Our dermatologists can help you decide on the right amount of treatments for your needs.

Possible Microneedling Side Effects

For the most part, side effects from microneedling are limited to the first week after treatment when your face will likely appear slightly pinkish and swollen. However, it’s not uncommon to have a minor breakout immediately following a microneedling treatment. Keep your skin clean and be careful when applying makeup, especially during the first couple of weeks after your appointment. You’ll want to use clean makeup brushes and high-quality skin products.
