How Ablative Fractional Skin Resurfacing Works

Pixel Perfect ablative fractional skin resurfacing can be used on the entire face or specific areas of the face to improve the appearance of:*

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Areas of sun damage

Ablative fractional skin resurfacing works by making microscopic perforations in the deeper layers of the skin. These micro-injuries are arranged in a pattern, with the skin in between the injuries remaining intact. The collagen contracts between the tiny holes for an all-over skin tightening effect.*

This technique is advantageous for two reasons: less surface injury and a quicker overall recovery. Traditional ablative resurfacing, which removes the top layer of skin, creates a universal surface injury, and can require almost a month of recovery. Because ablative fractional resurfacing targets the deeper layers of skin, and leaves tissue intact between the micro-injuries, recovery time is significantly shortened. Also, fractional treatment is less risky than traditional ablative treatment.*

What to Expect from Your Pixel Perfect Treatment

Ablative fractional skin resurfacing is performed at Aesthetic Dermatology’s Bala Cynwyd office on an outpatient basis. Usually local anesthesia is recommended for your comfort, and a sedative may provide a relaxing effect. Prior to your treatment, your skin is cleansed and your eyes are covered as protection from the laser’s beam.

The Pixel Perfect handpiece is placed over the skin and emits tiny pulses of laser light. The light penetrates the skin and creates the micro-injury sites, leaving healthy tissue intact between the tiny holes. Total treatment time varies by individual, but generally takes around 30 minutes. Those with severe skin issues may require longer treatment.*

While many people are happy with their results after a single treatment, others may schedule a series of treatments to achieve their desired skin tone and texture.*

Recovering from Ablative Fractional Skin Resurfacing

After your Pixel Perfect treatment, the face may be covered with an ointment to protect the skin as it heals. Initially, the skin will look red or flushed, similar to a sunburn. The Aesthetic Dermatology team will provide instructions for cleansing and protecting the skin from the sun during the initial recovery. Recovery can take as little as a few days, depending on the individual.*

Typical Pixel Perfect Results

Once the redness subsides, your skin should look clearer, smoother and more even in tone and texture. Wrinkles and pigmentation should be less noticeable. Results from laser skin resurfacing can last for years to come; periodic touch-up treatments may be recommended.*

Possible Side Effects of Ablative Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Ablative fractional skin resurfacing is generally a safe procedure with a low risk of complications. Possible side effects of ablative fractional skin resurfacing include post-operative swelling and scabbing. The skin may also be pink for several weeks to months, but this can be concealed with makeup.
