Philadelphia Microdermabrasion ResultsIf you’re plagued with uneven skin texture, large pores, light scars or sun damage, microdermabrasion is a great alternative to breaking out the belt sander. Microdermabrasion gently buffs the skin to improve minor blemishes and imperfections, leaving your skin with a healthy glow.

At Aesthetic Dermatology, we understand that skin rejuvenation should be a customized process that doesn’t cut into more of your schedule than you can afford. That’s why we offer “lunchtime treatments” like microdermabrasion at our Bala Cynwyd practice, bringing out the best in your complexion without serious downtime.*

How Microdermabrasion Works

Microdermabrasion works by using a handheld device to gently pass over the skin’s surface. This device exfoliates the skin with tiny micro-diamonds that brush across the skin’s surface before being vacuumed up, along with excess skin cells that have been loosened by the exfoliation process. Really, the entire treatment gives new meaning to that whole “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” thing.*

Microdermabrasion treatments can improve the appearance of light scars, discoloration, sun damage and even stretch marks by gently “sanding” the surface of the skin. Think of it as a more intensive version (but less damaging) of exfoliation products you use at home. The process removes the dull, dry or damaged outer layer of skin, revealing the fresh, underlying layer underneath. The process also generates more collagen and minimizes pore size for an overall younger and more radiant complexion.*

Microdermabrasion is most commonly applied to the face, but it can also be used on the neck, chest, hands, back, elbows and even feet.

SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion

At Aesthetic Dermatology, we offer SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion skin treatments, an advanced form of microdermabrasion that takes the benefits of microdermabrasion even further with a simultaneous infusion of topical serums. The combination of topical serums used can be highly customized to meet the needs of each individual. Using a patented technology, this skin rejuvenation system includes a variety of different treatment tips to address a full range of complexion concerns.

SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion treatments are typically scheduled as a series of 6 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart. Additional treatments may be recommended depending on your personal goals.

What to Expect from Your Microdermabrasion Treatment

As a noninvasive rejuvenation treatment, microdermabrasion is quick, painless and doesn’t require you to take any downtime.*

During treatment, a special diamond-tipped wand is carefully moved across your skin. The wand exfoliates the skin and sloughs off dead skin cells. Next, the skin cells are gently suctioned through a small vacuum-like device.

Typically, no anesthetic is used during microdermabrasion treatments. You should feel the device gently sanding your skin, but the procedure shouldn’t cause any discomfort. Some people liken the sensation to a facial massage, so just relax and enjoy yourself.

It’s common to combine microdermabrasion treatments with other skin rejuvenation treatments, or alternate microdermabrasion with similar resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels.

Recovering from Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion doesn’t require any downtime, so you can get back to your daily routine as soon as you leave our office. Our dermatologists might recommend certain skincare products for additional post-treatment nourishment to help you get the most our of your results. You may have some temporary redness or minor swelling, and your skin may feel flaky or dry for up to a week following your appointment. These side effects should resolve on their own.*

Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks following your microdermabrasion treatment, as your fresh new skin will be extra sensitive and susceptible to sun damage.

Typical Microdermabrasion Results

Although everyone’s experience may be a little different, most people see their results develop over the course of 2 to 4 weeks after their treatment. Your skin should begin to look and feel smoother, your pores may appear smaller and any blemishes or scarring may become lighter and less noticeable. You may also notice a decrease in sun spots and fine wrinkles.*

Most people get microdermabrasion treatments in a series, with each treatment spaced about 1 month after the last. Anywhere from 3 to 6 treatments may be recommended, depending on your needs.*

Possible Microdermabrasion Side Effects

Microdermabrasion is generally a very safe procedure. Since the treatment is essentially just an aggressive exfoliation, complications are rare. If you have active acne on your face, you may experience inflammation or irritation following your treatment, and in some cases, acne may spread. If you notice any worrisome effects following your microdermabrasion, contact our office for a follow-up evaluation.
