Laser Skin Tightening
Firmer, Smoother Skin without Surgery
Laser skin tightening is an excellent way to offset the effects of the natural aging process, sun and environmental damage. It is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin laxity. Dr. Lynn Klein and our team at Aesthetic Dermatology have helped many patients postpone the need for more invasive treatment (e.g., facelift), thanks to laser skin tightening.
How Does Laser Skin Tightening Work?
One of the universal side effects of aging (as well as sun and environmental damage) is skin laxity. The collagen fibers stretch and loosen (imagine a worn rubber band), and the skin becomes less elastic. Over time, the skin droops and sags unattractively.
Laser skin tightening uses infrared light to heat up the collagen matrix under the skin’s surface. This heat causes the skin to contract for a tighter look; it also restarts the body’s production of new collagen for softer, smoother and healthier looking skin. The laser is able to selectively heat the deeper layers of the skin while protecting the surface of the skin with controlled cooling.
Laser skin tightening has been compared to laser skin resurfacing. Laser skin resurfacing can be used to treat a broader range of cosmetic issues than laser skin tightening (e.g., wrinkles, age/sun spots, acne and other scars). However, laser skin resurfacing removes the outer layer of skin to promote the growth of new, healthier skin. This is riskier and more invasive than laser skin tightening, which works on a deeper layer. Laser skin resurfacing is generally associated with more discomfort, and could result in unwanted changes in pigmentation and additional scarring.
Laser skin tightening can be performed on the face, neck, abdomen, arms, legs and buttocks. Treatment takes place at Aesthetic Dermatology’s Bala Cynwyd office. Anesthesia is not needed, but a numbing cream may be applied prior to beginning treatment.
The laser handpiece is placed over the area of lax skin. As it moves, it emits pulses of infrared light, which penetrate the skin’s surface to the upper dermis. The collagen contracts and fresh collagen begins to grow. Because the laser protects the upper layers of skin, there is no pain or peeling. Patients report an alternating heating sensation with regular blasts of cool air from the handpiece. Some patients feel a mild stinging sensation, similar to a rubber band being snapped against the skin in the treated area.
Recovering from Laser Skin Tightening
Because it is not a surgical or invasive treatment, laser skin resurfacing does not require downtime. After treatment, you can return to work and your regular routine right away.
Loose skin should look tighter almost immediately after treatment. Wrinkles will look less pronounced, and your complexion will look healthier and more even.
Collagen regeneration is a gradual process. Skin quality will improve in the months following treatment, as the skin’s natural collagen reserves are replenished.
Two or three separate treatments may be needed to achieve the desired skin tightening results.
Possible Laser Skin Tightening Side Effects
Possible laser skin tightening side effects include temporary redness, brief lightening or darkening of the treated skin and a slight chance of scarring. If you experience pain or any complications after treatment, please contact our office.
