Laser Hair Removal - Bala Cynwyd, Philadelphia
Permanent Reduction of Unwanted Hair
Lasers have many uses in aesthetic medicine, including removing unwanted hair from the face or body. Earliest laser hair removal treatments were most successful when used on a certain hair color and skin type (i.e., light skin with dark hair). However, Dr. Lynn Klein and the Aesthetic Dermatology team have invested in advanced laser hair removal technology, which can successfully treat nearly all hair colors and skin types, including dark-skinned individuals of all ethnic origins. Laser hair removal treatment is minimally invasive, convenient and long-lasting.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal treatment can eliminate hundreds of hair follicles in seconds. Controlled pulses of light are delivered to the area of unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by the hair follicle and the heat destroys it, preventing the potential for hair regrowth. This happens without damaging the surrounding skin.
Treatments are customized according to hair color, texture and body location. Black, brown and red hair colors can be treated.
Laser hair removal is performed at Aesthetic Dermatology’s Bala Cynwyd office. The area to be treated is cleansed and the unwanted hair is shaved. Anesthesia and pain medication are not required, but topical anesthetic can be used for more sensitive areas of the face or body.
The laser handpiece is directed at the hair follicles and delivers a beam of highly concentrated light. This is repeated across the treatment area. It is not painful; patients have described the feeling as similar to a mild sting.
After treatment, the area is cleansed and sunscreen is applied.
Large areas, such as the back, shoulders, abdomen and legs, can be treated quickly. Small facial areas such as the upper lip, chin and beard can be treated in minutes.
Recovering from Treatment
Laser hair removal does not require any downtime. You can resume your regular activities immediately after treatment. Be sure to protect the treated area from sun exposure for two to four weeks after treatment.
Typical Laser Hair Removal Results
Hair grows in different cycles, and the laser is only effective on hairs in the active growth cycle. Generally, more than one session is needed to achieve the desired results. Treatments are scheduled a few weeks apart. Our team will advise the exact number of treatment sessions needed during consultation.
Initial results can be seen immediately after the first treatment, and will continue to improve with time. Your skin will look and feel much smoother and softer.
Possible Laser Hair Removal Side Effects
Side effects from laser hair removal are rare, but include blistering, soft scabbing and redness. If these side effects appear, they will resolve quickly.
In rare cases, the treated skin may become slightly lighter or darker.
To lower the risk of complications, limit sun exposure for two to four weeks before and after treatment.
