BOTOX Cosmetic

What Is Botox®?

Botox Cosmetic Treatment PhiladelphiaBotox® is an injectable product with many cosmetic and medical uses. It is commonly used by dermatologists to minimize premature signs of facial aging. Botox® is specifically designed to treat lines and wrinkles that develop around the eyes and forehead as the result of making normal facial expressions (e.g., laughing, frowning, squinting and worrying).  Botox® targets the underlying muscle activity that causes these lines and wrinkles to form.

Dr. Lynn Klein and our team at Aesthetic Dermatology have used Botox® for many years with great success. In fact, Dr. Klein was one of the first doctors in the area to offer Botox®. Our practice has a loyal following of Bala Cynwyd Botox® patients that visit our office regularly to maintain a youthful, relaxed and attractive facial appearance.

How Botox® Works

Normally, the brain sends messages to the muscles so they can contract and move (arranging the face into specific expressions). Over time, this repeated muscle activity causes crow’s feet and frown lines to appear between the eyebrows.

When injected into these specific facial muscles, Botox® blocks the nerve signals, paralyzing the muscles. As muscle activity temporarily ceases, the overlying skin looks smoother and less wrinkled.

Botox® Treatment Details

Botox® treatment is conveniently performed at Aesthetic Dermatology’s Bala Cynwyd office. At the most, a topical anesthetic may be used.

First, one of our board-certified dermatologists will examine your face, noting the areas of concern. Your face will be carefully marked as a guide for treatment.

Using a very fine needle, small amounts of Botox® are precisely injected into the specific muscles that contract. You may feel a sensation similar to a pinprick, but it won’t be painful. The number of injections and the amount of product used depends on the specific area(s) treated and the amount of correction necessary.

Botox® injections may be combined with dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing or another cosmetic procedure for optimal facial rejuvenation results.

Recovering from Botox® Treatment

Botox® treatment requires minimal downtime. Right after your Botox® appointment, you may immediately return to work and your normal activities. You should avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours or so. Also, refrain from rubbing or putting any pressure on the treated area, as this could cause the Botox® to migrate and facial paralysis to occur.

Typical Botox® Results

Botox® results typically appear within 3 days, with maximum benefits appearing in 14 days. Your eye area and forehead will look smoother. Wrinkles will be less noticeable, and you will look more alert and rested. Your results will look completely natural; no one will be able to tell you’ve had any cosmetic treatment.

Botox® results tend to last three to four months, in most cases. Gradually, you will notice your results starting to fade, at which point we encourage you to schedule a repeat treatment to maintain the effects.

Possible Botox® Side Effects

Botox® is approved by the FDA for safe use, and complications are rare. Side effects are usually mild and temporary (if they occur at all). In some cases, patients experience temporary bruising, slight eyelid drooping or an asymmetrical facial expression. Other side effects may include dry mouth, fatigue, headache, neck pain, double vision or decreased eyesight. If you notice anything worrisome after your Botox® treatment, call our practice and speak to a member of our team.
